Not every good walk needs blue skies. On a rainy autumn day I headed up the lower slopes of Vitosha above Bistritsa, a village on Sofia's southern edge where the city ends and the mountain begins. 🌧️
The plan was simple: walk the forest along the Panorama path between Bistritsa and Zheleznitsa, then stop on the road down to Simeonovo to photograph Sofia below. The rain changed both parts of the plan, and in the end made them better.
🌲 The Panorama path
The Panorama path runs through the forest of Vitosha Nature Park, linking the villages of Bistritsa and Zheleznitsa along the mountain's lower slopes. It is an easy, almost flat walk, popular with hikers and mountain bikers, and as the name promises, it opens up views over the Sofia valley wherever the trees thin out.
Around 1,130 m above sea level the trail passes the Galunka shelter, a good spot for a break. Short loops of 5–6 km start from both villages, and a longer loop of about 13.5 km links the two. 🥾
Vitosha itself is Bulgaria's oldest nature park, established in 1934, and the first protected area of its kind in the Balkans.
🍂 Autumn in the rain
The rain turned the forest into a quiet, glowing tunnel. A narrow asphalt road wound uphill under arching branches, its dark, wet surface scattered with bright yellow leaves. On both sides, a thick carpet of brown and copper leaves covered the ground, while the canopy above shone in every shade from lime green to gold. 💛
With the grey sky filtering the light, there were no harsh shadows, only soft, even colour. Rain is the photographer's secret in autumn forests: wet bark turns almost black, and every leaf looks more saturated against it.
[Anything else from the walk: who you went with, what you heard or met, how far you walked.]
🌆 Sofia in the mist
As evening fell, I stopped on the winding road between Bistritsa and Simeonovo, where the hillside opens onto the whole city. 🌃
The rain hadn't fully let go. A veil of mist hung over Sofia, softening everything behind it: the far edge of the valley dissolved into haze, and the distant lights glowed as soft, blurred orbs. Closer in, the city was sharp and alive. Rows of apartment blocks with thousands of lit windows, office towers in cold white light, and the red and white streams of traffic pouring down the boulevards.
At the foot of the hill, the dark forest and the ring road framed the scene, with a line of street lamps tracing the edge of the city. On the skyline, a new tower still under construction, crane on top, rose above everything else. 🏗️
Fog usually means a cancelled shoot. Here it did the opposite: it added depth, layering the city from crisp foreground to ghostly horizon.

If you go: Bistritsa is about 15 km from Sofia's centre, reachable by city bus. The Panorama path starts above the village, and the road down to Simeonovo has several pull-outs with open views over the city, best at dusk.
